Introduction: Biology of orchids and of orchid mycorrhizal interactions

چکیده

With the nursery and garden center industry expanding, it is important to keep the consumer returning year after year for the newest, most exciting and most unusual species. Perennial nursery crops are one sector of the nursery market that has grown rapidly due to the addition of new species. Though orchids are not new to the horticultural trade, these fascinating plants have long been in the domain of the specialist. With interest in native plants growing, the propagation and sale of our native orchids will bring these plants to an expanding market. The potential for orchids is large as the native species offer the exotic blooms of the tropical species with superior hardiness. Even the smaller flowered species are comparable to the small-flowered spring bulbs beloved by many. Native orchids will add much-demanded new crops to the horticultural trade and substantially boost returns for propagators, growers and sellers. The objective of this research is to develop new techniques that will significantly improve the in vitro germination of native orchid species. This will be accomplished by the use of molecular biological methods to identify genes expressed during mycorrhizal infection of germinating orchid seeds. The characterization of these genes through computer biology or through in vitro studies will increase understanding of one example of orchidmycorrhizal symbiosis.

Deception above, deception below: linking pollination and mycorrhizal biology of orchids.

Several key characteristics of the species-rich orchid family are due to its symbiotic relationships with pollinators and mycorrhizal fungi. The majority of species are insect pollinated and show strong adaptations for outcrossing, such as pollination by food- and sexual-deception, and all orchids are reliant on mycorrhizal fungi for successful seedling establishment. Recent studies of orchid p...

Mycorrhizal diversity in photosynthetic terrestrial orchids

• Specific orchid–fungal associations are known for nonphotosynthetic orchids but fungal diversity in photosynthetic orchids is thought to be quite broad. Specific fungal associations will figure prominently in conservation efforts, while diverse associations may require less attention. We combined culture techniques with ITS and mtLSU sequences and phylogenetic analysis to determine the geneti...

Widespread mycorrhizal specificity correlates to mycorrhizal function in the neotropical, epiphytic orchid Ionopsis utricularioides (Orchidaceae).

Tropical orchids constitute the greater part of orchid diversity, but little is known about their obligate mycorrhizal relationships. The specificity of these interactions and associated fungal distributions could influence orchid distributions and diversity. We investigated the mycorrhizal specificity of the tropical epiphytic orchid Ionopsis utricularioides across an extensive geographical ra...

Phylogenetic and microsatellite markers for Tulasnella (Tulasnellaceae) mycorrhizal fungi associated with Australian orchids1

UNLABELLED PREMISE OF THE STUDY Phylogenetic and microsatellite markers were developed for Tulasnella mycorrhizal fungi to investigate fungal species identity and diversity. These markers will be useful in future studies investigating the phylogenetic relationship of the fungal symbionts, specificity of orchid-mycorrhizal associations, and the role of mycorrhizae in orchid speciation within ...

A narrowly endemic photosynthetic orchid is non-specific in its mycorrhizal associations.

Mycorrhizal association is a common characteristic in a majority of land plants, and the survival and distribution of a species can depend on the distribution of suitable fungi in its habitat. Orchidaceae is one of the most species-rich angiosperm families, and all orchids are fully dependent on fungi for their seed germination and some also for subsequent growth and survival. Given this obliga...
